Swan
in Love
Eve Bunting
Illustrated by Jo Ellen McAllister Stammen
Atheneum, 2000
$16.00 hardcover
32 pages
"On
the lake was a boat shaped like a swan.
"Swan
loved her."
The
other swans and animals think Swan is silly. But Swan knows that love
is never wrong, and that "different" does not matter.
And,
in the end, Swan is right.
Swan
in Love is sad and beautiful and uplifting all at once. Much of the
beauty lies in the simplicity of Eve Bunting's telling, a sparseness of
words that contrasts with the warm detail of the illustrations. Jo Ellen
McAllister Stammen's pictures gently capture the grace and dignity of
swans and reinforce Swan's quiet confidence.
Swan's
transformation at the end may be a little ambiguous -- I know what I
think, but that doesn't mean you'll think the same thing.
But
I do think you will find that Swan in Love is well worth a careful
reading.
