White Wolf Publishing has tackled an ambitious
project: the definitive publication of the many books and stories of
Michael Moorcock's "Eternal Champion."
Elric of Melniboné, undeniably Moorcock's most popular
character, is just one aspect of the Eternal Champion; the adventures
of the other heroes -- including Hawkmoon and Von Bek -- are
collected in the other books of this 15 volume series. Elric: Song
of the Black Sword is Book 5 and contains the novels Elric of
Melniboné, The Fortress of the Pearl, The Sailor
on the Seas of Fate, and The Weird of the White Wolf. Book
6, The Road Between the Worlds, is due in August 1996, but the
second Elric collection, Elric: The Stealer of Souls, is Book
11 and will not appear for a few more years.
Of this definitive Elric, Moorcock says, "While I've put his
adventures in this final order and made some minor revisions, I've
made only a few changes to the prose, which ... does the job it's
meant to do with, I hope, a bit of diverting gusto."
This review, together with Ill Met in Lankhmar, originally appeared in
the June 30, 1996 edition of The Roanoke Times under the
