Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. Fritz Leiber once bombastically and enthusiastically described them as "the two greatest swordsmen ever to be in this or any other universe of fact or fiction." Their adventures take them from the bottom of the Inner Sea to the highest mountain in Nehwon; from the Mediterranean of our world to the seedy backstreets of Lankhmar. They serve as champions on opposite sides of the same battle; give up adventuring for religion; quest for invisible jewels and equally invisible princesses; suffer a curse of pig-trickery...Fritz Leiber and his friend Harry Otto Fischer based Fafhrd and the Mouser on themselves (Fafhrd is Leiber) as a game in the 30s. Fischer wrote some 10,000 words of one adventure, which Leiber later incorporated "unchanged" into "The Lords of Quarmall." Leiber himself wrote about the "dubious heroes" for the next fifty years
From their first appearances in the pulp magazines of the 1940s, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser have entertained and inspired the fantasy world. Lean Times in Lankhmar is the second volume of White Wolf Publishing's program to put Leiber's stories back in print. It combines the 1968 collections Swords in the Mist and Swords Against Wizardry, and contains such classic tales as the title story, "The Two Best Thieves in Lankhmar," and "Adept's Gambit." Book 3 of the series, Return to Lankhmar, is due in April 1997.
