Star Wars: The New Rebellion
Kristine Kathryn Rusch
Bantam Books. $22.95
(paper $5.99)
Luke Skywalker is searching for a former student who
turned to the Dark side. President Leia faces a no-confidence vote
following a deadly explosion in the Senate Hall, and Han and Lando
return to the nefarious Smuggler's Run. Looks like another normal day
in the New Republic.
The New Rebellion is the latest novel in the ongoing
multi-author "Star Wars" series. It's better than some, not as good
as others. Most noticeably, Rusch does not have a good grasp of "Star
Wars" humor; the bantering between C-3PO and R2D2 is particularly
tedious, and other scenes -- the mud-covered Wookies, for instance --
might have worked better as visual humor in a movie. Speaking of
movies, I would much prefer to wait for the forthcoming re-release of
the original Star Wars movie, or the new "Star Wars" series
rumored to be already in production.
