A Wizard in War has Stasheff's characteristic fast plot and verbal sparring, although it is not up to its predecessor, A Wizard in Bedlam. A Wizard in War staddles, as Stasheff so often does, the fine line between science fiction and fantasy. He can tend toward bookish with his social satire, but he recognizes this and with typical good humor has Magnus and Dirk make jokes about it.
